It's the one with the terrifying sleeve!!! We've rejoiced in laying an ominous stack of the
Ugly Side of love 12" on the counter these last few weeks, many a perturbed... disturbed visitor.
Championed by Portishead's Geoff Barrow
(a fellow Bristolian) Malachi
(formally Malakai) deliver a brooding and at times threatening record that is relentless in it's smash and grab homages. Sample heavy with a plethora of
'that sounds like...' moments.... it doesn't detract and particularly lyrically the album is wildly inventive and creates a surreal landscape that the album swaggers through in a cock sure way.
'Snowflake' in particular is rhythmically jarring and addictive and brilliant because of it.

Malachai mix Love-style garage psychedelia and trippy samples with modern production savvy. The result is catchy, off-kilter backdrops for vocals that are a clear tribute to Horace Andy. Think Mellow Gold-era Beck crossed with the Kinks. - The Observer
