LP4 is the follow up (belive it or not) to 2008's LP3. Apparently the material for this latest collection was conceived during
the very same sessions that birthed this instrumental duo's third album,
released back in 2008. To explain the delay between these two
releases, you need only take a glance at what band members Evan Mast and
Matt Stroud have been up to over the last couple of years: in addition
to extensively touring the globe, these two got themselves embroiled in
bonafide hip-hop production and
generally finding themselves gaining richly deserved recognition from
the mainstream.
Ratatat’s is the duo’s first to be
recorded with a full string section (at Glassworks Studios, Manhattan)
It features numerous film samples, one from Werner Herzog’s Stroszek,
the others all courtesy of Linda Manz, the child actress who achieved
cult status on the back of her role in Terence Mallick’s Days of
Heaven. The strings are rich and cinematic, highlighting the duo could have a fine career in movie scores ahead of them.
In fact, it kind of sounds like the soundtrack to the yet to be made Sebastien Tellier biopic.
